Playbook: Detroit Lions
Formation: 5-2
Play: Cover 3
Setup:
- Base Align
- Spread your defensive line and crash them down
- Hot route your RE (On the left side of the screen) to a zone
- (Optional) Spread your linebackers
- Blitz your MLB (on the right side of the screen)
Overview: You should see the pressure come through the B-Gap from the left side of the screen most of the time. This play only works if the offense isn’t blocking an extra running back or tight end so make sure to mix it in with coverage defenses from the same formation.
Let’s take a look at this Madden 16 defense in a little more detail.
This screenshot does a nice job of illustrating how and why the play works. We are going to fool the offensive line and most of the time, they won’t be able to recover.
The quarterback snaps the ball and you can see that the offensive line is already confused.
The play ends in an easy sack for a loss of about 8 yards.

Very informative. What about setting up the hybrid coverages like FSU and So.Car use?
This is a lot of adjustments, how will I get them setup in time before the snap?
You either have to practice making the adjustments or just use a different play. It isn’t for everyone but people who have been playing for a while shouldn’t have a problem setting this up pre-snap.
