This mini ebook is dedicated exclusively to learning how to read defenses before the ball is snapped. If you can properly diagnose what coverage your opponent is in before you snap the ball, it makes everything much easier after you snap it.
There is no sure fire way to always know exactly what defense your opponent is in. However, there are a few things you can key in on if you are playing someone who doesn’t go to great lengths to disguise their coverage. We are going to cover that all below.
Cover 3 Defenses
Against cover 3 defenses, we are looking for one of the safeties to come down towards the line of scrimmage and the other one to move towards the middle of the field. This will generally mean the defense is either in a cover 3 defense or a cover 1 defense. Most of the time, it will be a cover 3 defense.
Cover 2 Zone Defense
If there are 2 deep safeties lined up 13-15 yards off the line of scrimmage, that usually means it is either a cover 2 zone defense or a cover 2 man defense. You can tell it is a cover 2 defense because of the cornerbacks’ positioning. In a cover 2 zone, for the most part they will not be pressed up against the receivers. Instead they will be 3-5 yards off.
Cover 2 Man Defense
Again we see 2 deep safeties lined up 13-15 yards off the line of scrimmage. This usually means that the defense is either in cover 2 man or cover 2 zone defense. We can see that it is cover 2 man defense because of the positioning of our cornerbacks. They are all pressed up against the receivers at the line of scrimmage.
Cover 4 Defense
The big giveaway when your opponent is in cover 4 defenses is that the 2 deep safeties are 9-11 yards off the line of scrimmage instead of 12-15 yards off the line of scrimmage. This is an easy giveaway.
Man to Man Blitzes
Man to man blitzes can vary but often times, the safeties will have to shift to directly over your receivers before you snap the ball. If you see a defense where the safeties look to be completely out of position, this will usually mean it is a heavy man to man blitz.
Summary
Remember, there are a lot of things that an experienced opponent can do to disguise his coverage but if you can catch him giving away his coverage just once or twice per game, you could be looking at a few really big plays.
Here is a quick screenshot summary of what to look for before the snap.
A look like the one above with one safety in the middle of the field and the other one up closer to the line of scrimmage usually means a cover 3 defense or a cover 1 defense.
The screenshot above shows a cover 2 zone (Tampa 2, Cover 2 Sink, Etc). Notice the 2 deep safeties 12-15 yards off the line of scrimmage. That tells you it is either a cover 2 man or a cover 2 zone defense. The cornerbacks being off 3-5 yards from their receivers then tells you that it is likely a cover 2 zone.
In the screenshot above, the safeties are still 12-15 yards off the line of scrimmage so we know it is either a cover 2 zone or cover 2 man. We then turn our attention to the cornerbacks. We see they are pressed up against the receivers. This usually means that it is a cover 2 man defense.
In the screenshot above, we notice that the 2 deep safeties are only 9-11 yards off the line of scrimmage. That is a dead giveaway that the defense is in cover 4.
Remember that there are a lot of things an experienced opponent can do to disguise his defense and there are even certain defenses in the game designed to throw off these simple reads. For the most part, however, if you see the defense lined up in any of the ways that we covered above, you should have a decent idea of what coverage they are in before you even snap the ball.

Great eBook! I know a lot of your plays in the other ebooks are listed with specific coverages they beat, but I’d love to see an eBook similar to this one that talked about which playbook concepts (Mesh, Texas, Stick, etc…) generally beat a coverage type
That is a great suggestion and it is definitely something we could look into in the future if it is something that our members want.
yeah plz create that ebook
That is definitely something I would be interested in seeing on here. Thanks for the eBooks, they are helping me a lot.
Glad to help!
Me too! Concept over play calling any day
I was definitely thinking that the video/text should at least briefly cover some attack types for each one here to make this much more informative. It’s well stated and good information but not having the attacking types is a missed opportunity for sure.
Great GREAT video series here guys. Well done! They are informed enough to give the keys to players but short enough that you’re not spending 20-mins on a video (unlike YouTube). I struggle to read defenses at times and this will help a LOT. Great job!
Glad you like it man! Our goal is always to try to get you the most information in the shortest amount of time possible so instead of spending time watching our videos you can be out playing on your own.
Ya’ll really did a whole explanation on this? This is madden 101, and clearly explained in the attacking coverages in gatorade skills trainer. when will you be releasing more money plays? Or can I expect a refund?
LOL
Many of our subscribers asked for something like that so after releasing 7 ebooks we figured we could do something like that for them. I know it could be considered slightly basic for some of our members, but it will help a lot of people.
Don’t worry though we will be back to releasing money plays soon!
When will you guys drop a new defensive or offensive playbook that works with new patch???
Kinda feel like I wasted my money becoming an ultimate member smh…. this is supposed to give us an edge. Not basic stuff that most people already know
It is an Unlimited membership which means that along with all of the money plays, schemes, and breakdowns we are also going to cover some basic information as well. Not every one of our subscribers is at the exact same skill level. Thank you for the feedback though. If this isn’t something that our members want, we can definitely focus more on money plays in the future.
It would also be helpful if you walked through the best way to disguise each defense, such as base align, press, man align, etc. Also, show how you make every 3-4 defense look the same.
We can definitely look into doing something like that in the future.
Great videos! Awesome!
What else would be great is to make videos showing what types of “routes” beat each defense. This would help with scheming.
~Mili
Great input Mili! We did something like that with our Gun Tight Offset Mini eBook because others had suggested that but we may also just do a general concept video of which route combinations beat which defenses.
I have a question that has been bugging me which Stats are for the user and what stats are for the cpu on D-line ?
I WOULD ANOTHER SCHEME EBOOK THAT TELLS ME THIS BEATS COV3,COV4, MAN TO MAN,COV2 AND ADD BLITZ COUNTERS
I PLAY ALOT OF ONLINE FRANCHISE TO BETTER MY TEAM PLAYERS WHICH ATTRIBUTES SHOULD I INCREASE WHEN THEY REACH GOALS TO TAKE LESSER PLAYERS TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Awareness is pretty important and speed always…… The franchise will actually suggest where to use your XP. I find if you follow their suggestions then it increases your players overall the quickest. But also depends what your going for. I typically save up WR’s for speed boost. Or if you’re in a real good league and it’s going to last the whole year. Saving and making a quick development guy into a superstar is definitely worth the money. Also make sure you’re manually doing the training. Something I didn’t realize at first, when you earn medals on the training exercises, and then do those same plays in game, you’ll actually earn more XP in the game from having a gold or silver medal in training. Pretty cool!
