In today’s Madden School Film Room episode, we are going over in detail one of the most effective formations in Madden 18, Singleback Deuce Close.
Check out the full breakdown below.
Playbook: Philadelphia Eagles
Formation: Singleback Deuce Close
Play: HB Wham
Setup:
- None
Reads:
- Follow the blockers
Overview: This is the most effective run in Madden 18. It is nearly impossible to blow up this run play in the backfield making it so difficult to defend. Especially if you see a Cover 2 look by the defense you are going to want to run Wham instead of Stretch because a Cover 2 will hit a Stretch in the backfield.
Playbook: Philadelphia Eagles
Formation: Singleback Deuce Close
Play: HB Stretch
Setup:
- None
Reads:
- Follow the blockers
Overview: If you see a Cover 3 or Cover 4 look a Stretch play is most efficient. The corners are not in flat zones therefore will not hit the running back in the backfield. You can audible back and forth between the HB Wham and HB Stretch run plays based on what you see the defense is in.
Playbook: Philadelphia Eagles
Formation: Singleback Deuce Close
Play: TE Angle
Setup:
- Block the running back
Reads:
- The first read on this play is going to be the drag route to the B/O receiver
- If that is not there look for the A/X tight end on the angle route
- Then progress to the X/Square receiver on the corner route
- Lastly, you have the Y/Triangle tight end on the streak
Overview: This is a great passing play to incorporate into this scheme. It attacks mainly one side of the field however, you can flip this play and your opponent will not be able to tell.
Playbook: Philadelphia Eagles
Formation: Singleback Deuce Close
Play: Bench
Setup:
- None
Reads:
- The first read on this play is the high and low reads on the left side of the screen with the tight end on the out route and the receiver deep to the corner
- The second read is the same as the first but on the right side of the screen
- The final check down is the running back on the delay route
Overview: This is a great play to audible to in a short yardage situation. It attacks both sides of the field high and low for easy reads for a first down.
Playbook: Philadelphia Eagles
Formation: Singleback Deuce Close
Play: PA Misdirection
Setup:
- Put the Y/Triangle Tight end on an out route
Reads:
- The first read is the Y/Triangle Tight end in the flats
- Then look for the X/Square receiver deeper to the corner
- Finally, find the post of the middle of the field which is the B/O receiver
Overview: This is a very good Cover 3 beater the tight end holds down the yellow zones allowing the B/O receiver to be wide open on the post.
Playbook: Philadelphia Eagles
Formation: Singleback Deuce Close
Play: PA Drag Wheel
Setup:
- Put the A/X tight end on a drag route
- Put the Y/Triangle tight end on a drag route
Reads:
- The first reads you have on this play is the drag routes from both tight ends
- Then you have the B/O receiver on the over route
Overview: This play destroys a Cover 4 defense and many other defenses. The over route by the B/O receiver pretty much will get open against any type of defense.
Hello.
This breakdown of the Deuce Close formation is great!
I learned a bunch to add to the execution of what has become my favorite formation.
From my memory in many other videos, Stick Work cancels play action a lot of the time by blocking the RB. I notice that you did not block the RB in the PA Misdirection and PA Drag Wheel plays.
Any particular reason why not? Are those plays more effective by keeping the play action?
Sam C.
There really isn’t any reasoning behind it. It just depends on the flow of the game and whether you want to keep the playaction or not.
