In today’s Madden School tip, we are going over a defense that is exceedingly popular as you play at higher levels. The cover 3 defense with the cornerbacks in deep halfs instead of deep 1/3rds does a good job of shutting down a lot of offenses but we’ve got a pretty effective way to beat it.
Check out the full breakdown below.
Playbook: Arizona Cardinals
Formation: Gun Tight
Play: Zona Seams
- Put your tight end on a fade route
- Block your running back
- Motion your B/circle receiver to the right
- (Optional) Put your receivers on the left on different routes
- Your main read against cover 3, cover 4, or cover 3 with the corners in deep halfs is the B/circle receiver along the sideline.
Overview: This play does a very good job of beating cover 3 with the corners in deep half zones as well as a cover 2 invert type defense. Those types of defenses get extremely popular as you play tougher competition. Running this play will hopefully force your opponent into a different defense.
This concept is great because it is found in multiple formations in the Arizona Cardinals playbook, which is what our first Madden 19 Offensive eBook is based out of.
Let’s take a closer look at how this play works.
This first screenshot has a lot going, It shows both the defensive play art and our offensive play art. Notice the cornerbacks in the deep half zones instead of their normal deep 1/3rd zones.
When we snap the ball, we notice the positioning of the guy in the purple zone. He looks like he is in a good position to defend the pass.
But he takes a few steps in toward the middle of the field. That is when we bullet pass it to our B/circle receiver. Lead pass to the sideline.
We make the catch for about a 20 yard gain and a first down.
