For the last few years, many members of the community have asked for Online Team Play to make it’s way back in to Madden. EA Sports listened. Madden 18 will feature a mode called MUT Squads which is basically the same thing but within the Ultimate Team area instead of picking default NFL teams.
You and 2 of your buddies can now play against other teams of 3 players online. You will each choose a role: Offense Captain, Defense Captain, and Head Coach. Here’s what each of those does.
Offense Captain
- Brings in all players from Offense and Special Teams for that user’s MUT Lineup
- Brings in the offensive playbook and calls every play on Offense
- When on Offense, you control the QB at the start of every play
- However they are not player-locked to the QB post-snap. If you call a run play and neither of the other two human-controlled players are on the HB, the player controlling the QB will immediately switch and become the ball carrier
- Controls all audibles and adjustments on Offense
- When on Defense, the user can control any of the 11 players on the field not controlled by another user
Defense Captain
- Brings in all players from Defense for that user’s MUT Lineup
- Brings in the defensive playbook and calls every play on Defense
- When on Defense, the user can control any of the 11 players on the field not controlled by another user
- Controls all audibles and adjustments on Defense
- When on Offense, the user can control anyone besides the QB at the start of any given play
Head Coach
- Brings in the Head Coach, Stadium, and Uniforms for that user’s MUT Lineup
- Calls timeouts and determines the results of penalties for the Squad
- When on Offense, the user can control anyone besides the QB at the start of any given play
- When on Defense, the user can control any of the 11 players on the field not controlled by another user
Some disappointing news was announced via Twitter that when Madden 18 first comes out, you will not be able to choose who you play in MUT Squads. You’ll just be randomly assigned to other groups of 3. There isn’t any word yet on whether or not that feature will be patched into the game at a later date.

My brother and our friend will be teaming up and building our MUT specifically in offense or defense and stick to Squads as much as possible. Knowing who your teaming up with and even customizing your teams together should be very beneficial. Also, not having to mic up to talk to teammates is a boon.
bring back regular community and make it with people being able to play with 4v4 instead of 3v3. The actual rankings in there made sense not this pay to have a decent team mess y’all brought out this year. That team play was a big staple in the past madden and could lead to big things for that side of the community.
