Zone drops is the hot new defensive feature in Madden 21, allowing you to control your defense with much more precision than ever before.
However, there are so major drawbacks to zone drops and in this tip we are going over how to tell if your opponent using them.
Check it out below!
Playbook: New England Patriots
Formation: Gun Y Off Trips Pats
Play: TE Deep Out
Setup:
- Put your tight end on a streak route
- Block your running back
- Put the RB/R1 receiver on a drag route and motion him to the left
- (Optional) Double team the DE/OLB on the right side of the screen and roll out a little right.
Reads:
- If your opponent is using a cover 2 defense with the new zone drops feature, the B/circle receiver will be wide open (because he won’t get bumped at the line of scrimmage).
- If he is covered, or if it is a different defense, you have the high low read between the drag route and the deep post route.
Overview: You’ll want to run this play when you are on the left hash mark. If you notice your opponent is using zone drops in a cover 2 defense, call this play (you’ll be able to tell by looking to see if the outside cornerbacks jam the outside wide receivers). This will force your opponent out of using the new zone drops feature and open up your offense.
I am very curious to see over the next few weeks how often people will use the zone drop feature. I don’t know how you feel, but I have a feeling that if you use it, people will quickly figure out how to exploit it by doing things like you are showing or by throwing the ball more underneath to nickel and dime their way down the field. (if you do deeper zone drops). Unless you are playing someone who does the same thing over and over that you can then counter using zone drops, it seems to me you could easily find yourself in a guessing game situation in which you guess wrong a lot of the time.
I am also curious about what your opinion will be over the next few weeks as you use it or encounter it when playing against people. Will the zone drop feature end up being something big to use or will it end up being something that people stop using after playing around with it for a little while?
I guess we will see. What do you think?
