Today we are going over a nice zone beater that gets routes open to both sides of the field. This is great because if a user tries to manually take away one option, you still have another on the other side of the field.
You can check out the full setup below.
Formation: Gun Empty Bunch Wide
Play: Z Spot Smash
Setup:
- Put the B/circle receiver on a streak
Reads:
- The first read is the RB/R1 and A/X route combination
- The second read is the X/Square and Y/Triangle route combination
Overview: This play is great against zone coverage. The route combinations on this play flood the zones very well. All you have to do is make the correct read and someone will be open on the play.
Let’s take a closer look at this play.
This is how the play should look right before you snap the ball.
Notice that we have our tight end in the flat open to the right.
We decide instead to hit our receiver on the out route to the left side of the field.
We catch it for about 7 yards but we do have room to turn it upfield.
By the time we are tackled we have about 10 yards and a first down.
