Singleback Y-Trips Mini Scheme

Playbook: Los Angeles Rams

Formation: Singleback Y Trips

Play: Jets 6 Soar

Setup:

  1. Put B/Circle on a fade
  2. Put Y/Triangle on an option route (LT/L2)

Reads:

  1. Our first read is the hole shot fade to B/Circle against cover 2 – pass lead to the sideline
  2. The second read is an inside pass lead to RB/R1 in the seam if it is open
  3. Our final and main read on this play is the high low between our TE drag route, the X/Square over route, and then finally the last read to our HB on the blue route curl

Overview: This is my favorite play in this mini scheme. The fade on the right side allows us to take advantage of the flat route vs Cover 2 and gives us a nice hole shot to the outside WR. Vs every other coverage, we have a nice high low read between our deep in route and the HB on the option route.

We want to make our first two reads on the right side almost instantly, and if they are not there, immediately flip our eyes to the middle of the field where we have our primary reads.

Play: Double China

Setup:

  1. Put B/Circle on a Fade
  2. Put RB/R1 on a whip route
  3. Put Y/Triangle on a streak

Reads:

  1. The first read is an outside pass lead hole shot to B/Circle against cover 2
  2. Our next read is a high low read on the right side between the whip route and corner route
  3. The third read is X/Square over the middle on the post route
  4. The final read is a streak to the HB, pass lead either left or right away from the leverage of the zone defender

Overview: Double China is a great play because we have two stock man beating routes, the X/Square post and the A/X corner route to the TE. I also like to hot route the fade route on the right side just to give us an easy Cover 2 beating option with one route, which also doubles as a clearout route vs any other zone. This is a well rounded play that lets us attack multiple coverages and multiple areas of the field.

Formation: Singleback Y Trips

Play: WR Post

Setup:

  1. Put X/Square on a slant

Reads:

  1. Our hot read on this play is the TE drag across the middle
  2. The second and primary read on this play is our mesh read between X/Square and RB/R1 across the field. We will either have the slant or the over route depending on which one our opponent users
  3. The final read on this play is the deep post to B/Circle over the middle

Overview: This is my go to play from Singleback Y Trips when I want to flood the middle of the field with crossing routes. In the other plays, I have usually one or two routes to occupy the user. WR Post has 4 man beating routes that all cross the middle of the field, which makes it extremely tough to guard all 4 at the same time.

Formation: Singleback Y Trips

Play: Curls Combo

Setup: No adjustments required

Reads:

  1. I have one primary read on this play,  which is the TE spot route over the middle to A/X.
  2. Our other two reads are the curl flat combos, one on each side of the field. If the flat zones play short, wait for the curls and low pass them. If the flat zones get depth, we take our yardage with the flat routes.

Overview: This is my favorite short yardage play to call from this formation. We have two curl flat combinations, as well as a TE spot route that does not get guarded vs zone and has to be manually guarded. When passing the curl routes, I always like to low pass them so the corners do not have a chance to break on the ball and intercept it.

Play: Four Verticals

Setup:  No adjustments required

Reads:

  1. Our first read is the hole shot to the left side of the field vs cover 2, if we immediately see the corner sink as if he is in a flat zone.
  2. If that is not open, I immediate look to the right side of the field for either a hole shot vs cover 2 or the middle read RB/R1 vs cover 3.
  3. My final two reads on this play are the over route to the TE, and then the dump down blue route to my HB as a last resort option

Overview: Four Verticals is a really underutilized play in madden that is extremely effective when run out of a 3×1 alignment. It is a real life concept used to attack zone defenses, and it functions the same way here in Madden 21. The middle read route to the slot WR is a perfect route, as it adjusts based on the defensive coverage like the WR would do in real football. This allows us to better attack different zones without needing to make any manual adjustments.

Formation: Singleback Y Trips

Play: HB Dive

Overview: HB Dive is our inside run option in this Singleback Y Trips formation. I primarily only run this vs a light box to keep our opponent honest, especially if they are playing us in a passing defense with few defenders inside the box.

Formation: Singleback Y Trips

Play: Stretch Alert X Lookie

Setup:

  1. Slide Protect to the right (LB/L1 + Right stick to the right)

Overview: This an effective stretch play that gives us an additional option due to the RPO. We have a backside Lookie route (1 step slant), but we must throw it quick to avoid the Ineligible Man Downfield penalty. I read the triangle defenders to the left as explained in the video to know if I am possibly able to throw the Lookie route. If any defender in that triangle formation shoots out to the flat, I will just run the ball.
