New QB Throwing Motions In Madden 23: Who Has Them and Why It Matters

Throwing motions are one of the most important factors in how effective any quarterback is in Madden 23.

Quarterbacks with clunky and slow releases are borderline can be unusable even if they have high ratings, while a quarterback with a lightning fast release motion will make all the difference in the world.

This information quickly became spread among professional Madden players after we released a detailed study on it over 3 years ago.

Why Throwing Motions Matter In Madden

It still works the same in Madden 23 as it did in Madden 20 when throwing motions were first introduced. For example, Aaron Rodgers has the “Slinger 1” throwing motion which is one of the best in the game. The test video we did below as part of our original study shows how much quicker he gets the ball out of his hands than his backup QBs did.

Even though it may not look like it, right after we snap the ball we immediately attempt to throw a pass to our receiver on the slant route. You can see just how much quicker Rodgers’ release is.

This chart also does a good job of showing release times based on QB throwing motion.

You can see that while the “Slinger 1” throw style gets the ball out of his hand quickest, some styles like “Traditional 5” take almost twice as long.

Now that you understand what QB release styles are and why they matters, let’s get into how it will impact this year’s game.

New QB Throwing Motions In Madden 23

Madden 23 is the first game since Madden 20 to introduce new throwing styles.

Along with all of the throw styles from past Madden games (listed in the chart above), Madden 23 also adds a few more to add into the mix.

  • Traditional 6
  • Traditional 7
  • Slinger 5
  • Slinger 6
  • Slinger 7
  • Slinger 8
  • Slinger 9

At least 6 quarterbacks will have one of these new throwing styles although we don’t yet know who will have what. Those are:

  • Justin Herbert
  • Kyler Murray
  • Matthew Stafford
  • Josh Allen
  • Joe Burrow
  • Malik Willis

You will want to test out these QBs’ throwing motions as soon as you get the game to see which are usable and which are too slow to be effective.
