Playbook: New England Patriots (Not in Steelers PB)

Formation: Gun Tight Doubles On

Play: HB Option

Setup:

1. Put your tight end on a fade route
2. Block your running back
3. Put your X/square receiver on a drag route

Reads:

1. Your main read on this play is always going to be your tight end deep against a cover 3
2. If you are under pressure or if it isn’t a cover 3 defense, hit your X/square receiver on the drag route

Overview: This play destroys cover 3 defenses as long as you have time to throw.

Playbook: New England Patriots (Not in Steelers PB)

Formation: Gun Tight Doubles On

Play: Tight Curl

Setup:

1. Put your tight end on a streak route
2. Put your Y/triangle slot receiver on a fade route
3. Block your running back
4. Slide protect
5. Motion your X/square receiver to the left

Reads:

1. You want to throw the ball to your Y/triangle receiver and lead pass it to the sideline right when the cornerback on that side comes up to defend the corner route
2. If he is covered, look to your B/circle receiver

Overview: This is another way to beat cover 3 defenses, this time to the left side of the field.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Tight Doubles On

Play: Bench (Version 1)

Setup:

1. Hot route your B/circle receiver to a fade
2. Hot route your Y/triangle receiver to a streak route
3. (Optional) Put your X/square receiver on whatever route you would like
4. Block your running back
5. Motion your tight end out to the right
6. Slide protect right

Reads:

1. The B/circle receiver is your main read deep

Overview: This is another way to beat cover 3 deep.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Tight Doubles On

Play: Bench (Version 2)

Setup:

1. Hot route your running back to a streak route and motion him to the left. Once he is set, hot route the running back to a fade route
2. Block your tight end
3. Hot route your B/circle receiver to a streak

Reads:

1. You will want to hit your running back deep this time. Lead pass to the sideline

Overview: This time we are beating the cover 3 deep with your running back.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Tight Doubles On

Play: Pivot Fork

Setup:

1. Put your X/square receiver on a streak
2. Motion your B/circle receiver to the left
3. Slide protect to the left
4. (Optional) Put your tight end on a slant or a drag route

Reads:

1. Against a cover 2 defense, your B/circle receiver should get open deep
2. The Y/triangle receiver on the whip route towards the sideline will also get open against pretty much any coverage.

Overview: This play destroys cover 2 defenses.

Formation: Gun Tight Doubles On

Play: HB Quick Base

Setup:

1. Motion your tight end to the left

Overview: Just follow your blockers and you should usually get a nice gain.

Formation: Gun Empty Steeler

Play: Steeler Switch

Setup: None Required

Reads:

1. Your RB/R1 receiver will usually be open right away
2. You can also look to your B/circle receiver or your A/X receiver in the flat

Overview: This is an effective play regardless of the coverage.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Empty Steeler

Play: Steeler HB Screen

Setup: None Required

Reads:

1. If the guy covering the running back follows him to the right side of the screen, throw it to your X/square receiver on the slant route
2. If the guy covering the running back does not follow him to the right, throw it to your running back on the screen pass.

Overview: This play will work once or twice a game but don’t over use it.

Formation: Gun Empty Steeler

Play: Steelers Go

Setup: None Required

Reads:

1. Your first look is the running back on the speed out route
2. If he is covered, look to the receivers running the in routes underneath

Overview: This is an extremely hard play for your opponent to stop even if he knows it is coming.

Formation: Gun Empty Steeler

Play: Corner Strike

Setup: None Required

Reads:

1. Your first look is to your B/circle receiver on the corner route
2. You can also look to the X/square receiver on the corner route
3. The A/X receiver will also get open against man to man defense

Overview: This play will get your opponent out of man to man defense.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Snugs

Play: Bench

Setup:

1. Put your B/circle receiver on a streak
2. Hot route the A/X receiver to a fade and motion him to the left
3. Block your running back
4. (Optional) Slide protect to the left

Reads:

1. Against a cover 3 defense, you will want to throw it deep to the A/X receiver
2. Against a cover 2 defense, wait a little and hit the Y/triangle receiver on the corner route
3. Your X/square receiver should get open for a quick pass against pretty much any coverage if you are under pressure

Overview: This is a great base play when you don’t know what your opponent is calling on defense.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Snugs

Play: Curl Weak Flood

Setup:

1. Put your B/circle receiver on a streak
2. Put the A/X receiver on a drag and motion him to the left
3. Put your y/triangle receiver on a fade route
4. Block the running back
5. (Optional) Slide protect left

Reads:

1. Against a cover 3, you are looking to throw it deep to the Y/triangle receiver
2. Hit the A/X receiver on the drag if the other receiver isn’t open or if you are under pressure.

Overview: This is another play that torches cover 3 defenses.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Snugs

Play: PA Pitt Cross

Setup:

1. Hot route the X/square receiver to a drag and motion him to the right
2. (Optional) Block your running back
3. (Optional) Slide protect left

Reads:

1. Against cover 2 defenses, you will want to hit your B/circle receiver deep
2. Against any other coverage, either your Y/triangle receiver or X/square receiver will be open

Overview: This is an incredibly hard play to stop if you make the correct reads.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Snugs

Play: Stick

Setup:

1. Hot route the A/X receiver to a quick out route

Reads:

1. Your first look is always the A/X receiver on the out route
2. If he is covered, either your Y/triangle receiver on the quick curl will be open or your X/square receiver in the flat

Overview: This is a great way to get 3-5 yards when you really need it.

Playbook: Pittsburgh Steelers

Formation: Gun Snugs

Play: Steeler Crosses

Setup:

1. Hot route the A/X receiver to a streak route
2. (Optional) Slide protect to the left

Reads:

1. Your first look is always the Y/triangle receiver
2. If he is covered, your X/square receiver may be open
3. If they are both covered, look to your B/circle receiver in the flat

Overview: This is a great play to call when you want to attack the middle of the field.
