Strong Close

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: Mesh

Setup:

  1. Put the B/O receiver on a streak
  2. Put the RB/R1 running back on a wheel route

Reads:

  1. The first read on this play is the X/Square receiver on the drag route
  2. Then look for the RB/R1 running back on the wheel in the flats
  3. Finally, look for the A/X tight end on the corner route

Overview: This play is effective against all types of zone coverage. The drag route works well because the running back on the wheel turns into a lead blocker to gain extra yards. The tight end on the corner route combines for a high low read on the right side of the field.

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: PA Deep (1st Setup)

Setup:

  1. Put the X/Square receiver on a streak
  2. Put the A/X tight end on a drag route
  3. Put either running back on a curl
  4. Motion the B/O receiver to the left

Reads:

  1. The first read on this play is the A/X tight end on the drag route
  2. Then look deep to the B/O receiver
  3. Look for the X/Square receiver if they are in Cover 3
  4. If everything else is covered check down to the running back on the curl route

Overview: On this play we are bombing both Cover 2 and Cover 3 defenses for huge gains. Many times, this play will result in a touchdown when ran correctly. Against Cover 2 the streak route is going to takeaway the safety leaving the B/O receiver wide open. Against Cover 3 the B/O receiver’s route will takeaway the outside third zone leaving the streak wide open.

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: PA Deep (Setup 2)

Setup:

  1. Put the X/Square receiver on a streak
  2. Put the RB/R1 running back on a wheel route
  3. Put the Y/Triangle running back on an out to the left
  4. Put the A/X tight end on a streak
  5. Motion the B/O receiver to the left

Reads:

  1. The first read on this play is the B/O receiver deep to the left
  2. If that is not there look for the X/Square receiver on the streak
  3. Then look for the RB/R1 running back on the wheel route
  4. Finally, check down to the Y/Triangle running back if need be

Overview: This is a high-risk high reward play. The reason being is that we have many routes going deep down the field with only one check down. However, with this play we can bomb essentially any zone coverages that the defense may throw at us. Also, the opponent will not be able to user both sides of the field at once.

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: PA Deep Cross (1st Setup)

Setup:

  1. Put the B/O receiver on a streak
  2. Put the A/X tight end on an out route
  3. Put the Y/Triangle running back on a curl route

Reads:

  1. The first read on this play is the A/X tight end in the flats
  2. Then look for the X/Square receiver on the over route
  3. Finally, check down to the running back on the curl

Overview: This play destroys zone coverage, the X/Square receiver gets wide open going toward the sideline on his over route, since the B/O receiver takes away the deep blue zones with his streak. Then there is two routes underneath with the tight end and running back combo.

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: PA Deep Cross (2nd Setup)

Setup:

  1. Put the B/O receiver on a drag route
  2. Put the A/X tight end on a streak
  3. Put the Y/Triangle running back on a curl route
  4. Motion the B/O receiver to the left

Reads:

  1. The first read on this play is the B/O receiver on the drag route
  2. Then look for the X/Square receiver on the over route
  3. Finally, check down to the running back on the curl

Overview: This setup looks similar to so many other plays in this formation. However, the motioned receiver is on a drag in this play which is unlike the other plays in this formation. This will confuse your opponent and keep them guessing.

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: WR Out

Setup:

  1. Put the X/Square receiver on a slant
  2. Put the B/O receiver on a zig route
  3. Block the RB/R1 running back
  4. Motion the B/O receiver to the left

Reads:

  1. The first read on this play is the B/O receiver on the zig route
  2. Then look for the X/Square receiver on the slant
  3. Next, look for the A/X tight end on the post
  4. Finally, check down to the running back on the delay route

Overview: This is the man beater of this formation. All three main reads absolutely torch man coverage with the use of the motion. This play will be nearly impossible to cover with man coverage

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: Double Post

Setup:

  1. Put the X/Square receiver on a streak
  2. Put the A/X tight end on a drag
  3. Put one of the running backs on a curl
  4. Motion the B/O receiver to the left

Reads:

  1. The first read on this play is the A/X tight end on the drag
  2. Then look for the B/O receiver deep
  3. Finally, check down to the running back if necessary

Overview: This play is important to run to the wide side of the field. This is so the B/O receiver has enough space to run his route and catch the ball with space. This play also looks just like many other plays we use in this formation but it is completely different so it will confuse our opponent.

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: Y Trail

Setup:

  1. Put the B/O receiver on a streak
  2. Option put the running backs on wheel routes
  3. Motion the B/O receiver to the left

Reads:

  1. The main read on this play is the X/Square receiver deep
  2. If that is not there look for the A/X tight end
  3. Finally, check down to one of the running backs

Overview: This play destroys Cover 2 defenses the B/O receiver’s streak takes away the deep half so that the X/Square receiver is wide open for a huge gain. There are also good underneath routes on this play if need be. However, the X/Square receiver is basically an auto touchdown against Cover 2.

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: HB Dive

Setup:

  1. Motion the B/O receiver to the left

Reads:

  1. Go up the middle or cut it to the outside

Overview: This HB Dive is effective in this game because you can either go straight up the middle for solid yards or cut it to the outside. The motion also makes this play appear to be the same as the pass plays in this formation so you can keep your opponent on their toes.

Playbook: San Francisco

Formation: Strong Close

Play: HB Off Tackle

Setup:

  1. Motion the B/O receiver

Reads:

  1. Read the blocking to either run it to the outside or cut it back up the middle

Overview: This run is very good in the goal line. This is because the blocking allows you to cut it back up the middle or just run straight to the outside. Motioning the receiver will keep your opponent guessing.

This is an awesome formation! Thanks!

FYI – I think you mislabeled the play you have listed as “Deep Post” I believe you meant to label it as “Double Post”, which is the play you show in the video.

You are very welcome man.

One more thing I noticed about the Double Post play. Step #3 in the written instructions above says to put one of the running backs on a drag. According to the video, you instruct us to put one of the running backs on a curl, not a drag.

Thanks again for such an awesome e-Book.

Great stuff Stick! Do you have any plays you like to run from this formation once you get inside the 10?

Hey man, appreciate the love on the E-book. Inside the 10 with these formations I mainly keep it simple and run the ball, so the Dive/Off tackle specifically out of Strong Close. If you need to pass I would use Mesh from Strong Close, or Slot Curl from Gun Tight. Also, the Stretch Alert X Lookie from Strong Y Off is deadly near the goal line because it is an RPO so your opponent has to watch the pass and the blocking for the stretch is ridiculous. If you have anymore questions for me feel free to ask!
PS: Sorry about the ridiculous username long story short can’t log on my normal account.

Hey love your ebook bro. Question, are you going to be doing a full book like the Ravens O one? Really love under center football and dig these. Just joined unlimited and have never used an ebook. So been in the lab with the Ravens but want to use more under center stuff and love these. Thanks!!!
