Formation: Gun Empty Y Slot
Play: Smash
Setup:
- You want to either be on the left hash mark or the middle, you just don’t want to be all the way on the right hash mark
- Hot route your Y/triangle receiver to a curl
- Hot route your RB/R1 receiver to a streak
- Hot route your two outside receivers to anything you want
Reads:
- Your primary read on this play is the A/X running back deep. Lead pass up and to the left
Overview: This play beats Cove 4 Drop in a way your opponent won’t see coming so they won’t be able to switch stick it.
It really helps to have a fast running back in the A/X spot just to get him downfield a little faster.
Let’s take a closer look at how this play works.
This is the pre-snap play art. The curl route on the left will hold the deep safety on that side while the streak route on the right will hold the other deep safety.
As the play develops, on the left side of the field you can see how the curl route is holding the deep safety.
On the right side of the field, the streak route keeps the other safety from running with our A/X receiver.
We can see how the two safeties in a Cover 4 Drop look as we split them down the middle.
We make the catch right in between the two safeties for a huge gain.
