The most common request we get here at Madden-School is to go over plays that require very little setup. Today we are going over a play found in the falcons playbook called Falcons HB Angle. There are no hot routes or audibles required. Just pick the play and run it for a 20 yard gain. The play is designed for new madden gamers, but even seasoned madden veterans can implement this play into their offense.

Playbook: Atlanta Falcons

Formation: Singleback Bunch

Play: Falcons HB Angle

Setup: None Required

Reads:

Your first read is your X/A receiver on the corner route.
If he is covered, look to your tight end or running back over the middle of the field.

Surprise Onside Kick Tutorial

I know this is a fairly basic tip for many of you, but for the madden-school.com members who don’t already know how to do a surprise onside kick, I put together a youtube tutorial video on it. If you call surprise your opponent with this at the right time, it can be a huge momentum swing and you can steal an extra possession. Play: Bench Switch

Setup:

Hot route your L1/LB and your X/A receiver to streak routes

Reads:

Your main reads are your Square/X receiver and your Circle/B receiver on the corner routes.
If they are covered, throw to your running back on the delay curl.

Overview: This play will absolutely destroy and cover 2 or cover 3 zone for 30 yard gains at a time. This play still works against man coverage, just the coverage is a little better.

Formation: Singleback Snugs Flip

Play: WR Corners

Setup:

Hot route your square/X receiver to a slant in
Hot route your L1/LB receiver to an out route
Send your L1/LB receiver in motion to the left and snap it before he gets set.
Hot rotue any other receivers to any routes you want.

Reads:

Your L1/LB receiver will be open against any man to man coverage for a quick throw high and to the inside.
Look to your other receivers on hot routes.

Overview: If you are playing someone who likes to try to nano with man to man blitzes, run this play and watch yourself get easy touchdowns.

Formation: Singleback Snugs Flip

Play: PA Pump Go

Setup:

Hot route your square/X receiver to a streak route and motion him to the right
Hot route your circle/B receiver to a slant out
Hot route your running back to block

Reads:

You will always 100% of the time be able to throw to your circle receiver on the slant out. Make sure to lead/precision pass up. It works best against zone coverage, but it will still beat man coverage if you have a good or tall receiver or tight end in that spot.
The L1/LB receiver on the blue delayed route is your checkdown/bailout receiver. If everyone is covered throw it to him for a 3-4 yard gain.

Overview: The blue route and the running back you have blocking provide great time to throw. You should only need 2 seconds however to snap the ball and lead pass up to your circle/B receiver.

Formation: Singleback Snugs Flip

Play: HB Wheel

Setup:

Hot route your circle/B receiver to a streak and motion him to the left

Reads:

Against most zone defenses your L1/LB receiver will be wide open for a big gain
Against man to man defense, your X/A receiver/tight end will be open coming across the middle of the field

Overview: If you can correctly read whether the defense is in man or zone by motioning over your circle/B receiver you should be able to pick up large chunks of yards every time you run this play.

Playbook: Miami

Formation: Gun Doubles Wk

Play: Slot Out

Setup:

Hot route your circle/B reciever to a slant in and motion him to the left

Reads:

Against zone coverage, look to your L1/LB receiver on the deep out route
Against man coverage, your circle/B receiver will be open on the slant route
If they are both covered, look to your running back and tight end on the short crossing routes.

Playbook: Arizona

Formation: Gun Bunch Wk

Play: Corner Strike

Setup:

Hot route your square/X receiver to a slant in
Hot route your tight end to a streak route
Smart route your circle/B receiver

Reads:

If the X/A receiver is open, throw a quick pass to him
Against cover 2 defensees, look to your circle/B receiver.
Against man to man coverage, your square/X receiver running the slant route will be open.

Below we are going to take a look at how this play should develop:

Above you can see that the defense has a good pass coverage play called but we are going to run the corner strike play anyway.

The tight end that we hot routed to a streak takes the safety coverage with him while our #1 receiver makes his cut to the corner of the endzone

You can see that the defense is very late to get over and we make the catch for a touchdown!

3-3-5 Bear: Middle Plug Blitz

The QB spy is still a very effective technique for manually rushing this year. For today’s free madden 12 tip, we are going to go over a defensive play that provides good run defense and gets great pressure off the edge.

Playbook: 46

Formation: 3-3-5 Bear

Play: Middle Plug Blitz

Setup:

Spread the D-line
Hot route your linebacker on the left side of the screen to a qb spy and move him out a few steps left.

When the quarterback snaps the ball, control the linebacker in the qb spy, take a few steps and dive toward him for a quick sack.

You can see that there is no indication that we are bringing pressure off the edge, so your opponent will not be expecting this.

Our opponent snaps the ball and you see the great jump that we get off the edge with no one blocking our linebacker.

We are able to sack the quarterback before the running back is able to come over to throw a block.

Sub 4-1-6 Overload 1 Roll Blitz

For today’s madden-school.com free madden tip, we break down a blitz in the Sub 4-1-6 formation that gets great pressure with absolutely no pre-snap adjustments. Some leagues, tournaments, and communities have specific rules but you will be able to use this blitz in any madden 12 game.

Formation: Sub 4-1-6

Play: Overload 1 Roll (Overload 3 Seam if you want to use the zone version)

Setup: None

This play is just meant to add to your arsenal of good blitzes to call in passing situations. There is not great coverage, but if your opponent is looking at a 3rd and long or if you know that your opponent is trying to take a shot deep down the field, call this play for an easy sack. Keep in mind that the man to man version of this play leaves the running back uncovered. You can use the safety in the deep blue zone to manually over this route.

You can see from the pre-play screenshot there is no indication that we are bringing pressure, so your opponent won’t have any reason to make any protection adjustments.

You see that our cornerback comes through the gap between our DE and out DT. Occassionally, our defensive end on the right side of the screen lso comes in untouched to creat pressure coming from the inside and off the edge.

Nickel 1-5-5 Nano Blitz

Keeping up with our theme of simple blitzes that get quick pressure in madden 12, the nickel 1-5-5 over storm brave nano blitz gets easy pressure right up the middle. Keep in mind that this blitz does rush 6 defenders so you have man to man coverage on all receivers. Mix this play in with other coverage plays in the 1-5-5 to keep your opponent guessing.

Playbook: Multiple D

Formation: Nickel 1-5-5

Play: Over storm brave

Setup:

Pinch your linebackers (right on the d-pad + down on the d-pad)
Reblitz all your linebackers (right on the d-pad + down on the right joystick)

You can see from the intial setup that this play looks like any 1-5-5 play. There is nothing to indicate that we are bringing heat right up the middle.

Our middle linebackers gets into the backfield untouched and has a clear shot at the quarterback.

We get a quick sack for an 8 yard loss before out opponent can even react.

It is important to mix this play in with other plays out of the 1-5-5. If you try running this play over and over again, your opponent will crush this defense. The nickel 1-5-5 over storm brave blitz is extremely effective when mixed in with other coverage plays.

Madden 12 Base Defense

I will not be holding anything back in today’s free madden 12 tip. You will be seeing my very own base defense that if you were to play me in a game you would see me running 30% of the time. Be forewarned, this defense requires a lot of pre-snap adjustments but if you are decently quick with the sticks it won’t be too hard to pull off. This defense is designed to confuse your opponent and completely shutdown your opponents #1 and #2 receivers forcing him to look to his 3rd, 4th and 5th receiving targets causing easy interceptions.

Formation: 46 Normal

Play: 2 Man Under

Setup:

Hot route your linebackers to zone (right on the D-pad + Up on the right joystick)
Hot rotue your DE on the right side of the screen to a purple buzz zone
Hot route your OLB on the left side of the screen to a purple buzz zone
(optional) If you are facing a scrambling qb, hot route your DE on the right side of the screen to a qb spy

Addtional Information: You can hot route your linebackers into any zones you want based on your opponents tendancies. We just prefer 2 safeties deep, 2 linebackers in the middle and 2 defenders in purple zones.

Why this works:

This play is designed to fool your opponent. From the looks of the defense it is man to man coverage, but in reality it is only a combo defense. You will not get beat deep because you have 2 safeties in deep blue zones. You will have the sidelines covered (recall from yesterday’s free madden tip how effective the purple zones are) and you will have the middle patrolled with 2 linebackers. Control one of the safties and room the field for user picks. This defense also has 8 men in the box which discourages your opponent from wanting to run the ball.
