Madden 12 Special Teams Strategy

This seems like a fairly obvious choice for experienced madden gamers but for some reason it is still a topic of much debate.  Some people are adamant that you should kick first or receive first.  Some gamers claim it really doesn’t matter.  Based on mathematically statistics, it is always better to choose to kick first if you win the toss.  In this article, I will explain why.

Let me explain… Madden features short quarters.   Ranked games are only 6 minute quarters.  Accelerated clock shortens that by 15-20 seconds more per play.  If you use the clock the right way, you can easily run 10 minutes off the clock.  (Note:  We are not advocating milking clock, but in certain situations, you will want to take your time to score)  Now after explaining some of the background, let me get into about how this will be useful in madden 12:

Let us say Madden-School is playing Average Joe.  I will walk you through the situations where madden-school chooses to kick as well as what would happen if they choose to receive.

This game is average joe vs. madden-school in a standard online ranked madden match.

Madden-School chooses to kick

Average Joe gets the ball first.  Madden-School plays decent defense on the first drive but eventually gives up a touchdown. (0-7 with 2 minutes left in the first quarter)

Madden-School then gets the ball.  Knowing that clock management is key, madden-school tries to run the ball but eventually gets stopped and punts the ball away. (Score still 0-7 now with 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter)

Average Joe gets the ball back.  He isn’t able to score this time and punts it away to madden-school. (Score still 0-7 with 2 minutes left in the 2nd quarter)

Madden-School gets the ball and executes a successful drive and scores a touchdown with only 15 seconds left in the half. (Score 7-7 at the end of the half)

The second half starts with madden-school getting the ball.  Madden-School scores a touchdown fairly quickly. (14-7 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.)

Average Joe gets the ball now and also leads a successful drive for a touchdown. (Score 14-14 at the end of the end of the third quarter)

Madden-School gets the ball and you know that you can take your time. (You run out the clock and kick a fg to win the game 17-14)

You can see that madden-school (the kicking team) got 4 possessions while average joe (the receiving team) only got 3 possessions.  You get 4 chances to score while your opponent only gets 3.  This is a very significant difference.

Note:  This only works if you are disciplined with your clock management.  If you have no discipline, you will not win very many games in madden 2012 anyway, so you can disregard this madden tip.
