The Detroit Lions have signed a familiar face this past week, Dre Bly, inking him to a two-year contract with hopes of filling a ginormous hole in the Lions secondary.
Last season, Bly started six games for the San Francisco 49ers, although he did see action in all 16 games. He racked up 29 tackles, three interceptions, and a pair of forced fumbles. Not too shabby.
Bly last laced them up in a Lions uniform in 2006. He was traded to Denver for running back Tatum Bell and offensive tackle George Foster. While most players look forward to playing for another team, Bly surprisingly liked his time here in Detroit and is glad to be back. “I feel like it’s home and to come back and have a chance to finish my career where I played my best ball is a great feeling.”
Bly was always known for his coverage ability rather than his physical play. He had 19 interceptions in his time here in Detroit. But for a guy with a small stature- 5 foot 10, 188 lbs, he also had 189 tackles and 12 forced fumbles. He made the Pro Bowl in 2003 and 2004. Now that we have somewhat improved our defensive line and run stopping, Bly should be able to sit back in coverage more and be used less in run support. Which could be a beautiful thing for the few Lions fans out there.
