The Eagles announced Monday that they have acquired safety Brett Johnson off waivers from the Buffalo Bills, the 6-1 194 pound safety was originally signed by the Bills as a rookie free agent.
Johnson had a very productive career at Cal finishing with 107 tackles and three interceptions, he started in all but one game as safety and led all Golden Bears DB’s in tackles with 52, he had an outstanding game against Oregon finishing with a forced fumble and eight tackles.
Tony Pauline of TFYDraftPreview.com wrote that Johnson “possesses the size/speed numbers and underlying skills to succeed in a zone scheme”, Tony also said he is very disciplined in his assignments and is at his best between the numbers.
The Eagles will need to cut the team down to an 80 man roster come training camp, the two unsigned rookies 1st rounder Brandon Graham & second rounder Nate Allen do not count towards that 80 man limit. The Eagles have pro-bowl safety Quinten mikell, veteran safety Quinten Demps, and rookies Kurt Coleman and Ryan Hamilton at their disposal for FS and SS. Victor “Macho” Harris played safety last season but I feel that it was more out of necessity than anything else, he has been exclusively used at corner throughout the OTA’s.
