Carolna Panthers in 2010

The Panthers are an interesting team, as they are moving on without their long-time franchise QB (yes, he was the franchise QB of the Panthers, whether you want to admit it or not) Jake Delhomme, and they drafted Jimmy Clausen to be the expected future franchise QB. However, he will not likely start this season, as QB Matt Moore will be the starter as of today. The Panthers boast a ridiculous run game, with DeAngelo Williams and Johnathan Stewart, both whom ran for 1k rushing yards with Stewart getting more yards. The offensive line is a mean run blocking line, so it is to be expected that the Panthers will run 60% of the time, with Moore playing the role of Delhomme as the game manager. The WR core isn’t impressive at all once you get past by All Pro WR Steve Smith (who has a broken arm as of now and will miss training camp, or at least the start of it, but is expected back for the season opener). The Panthers drafted 2 WRs in the 2010 draft in Brandon LaFell, who is expected to fill in the role of Mushin Muhammand (who has recently retired), and Armanto Edwards, a former QB for the Appalachian State University (the alma mater of a certain someone on MS), who will most likely be the slot WR as he is very quick. The aforementioned WRs will need to step up if the Panthers want to have a great season and go deep into the playoffs.

The defense is anchored by University of Miami grad Jon Beason, followed by Chris Gamble and Richard Marshall, the CB tandem the Panthers have. The defense was very finicky last season, not giving up a whole lot of rushing or passing, but still lacked in turnovers. This season may just be the same as last year turnover-wise, but with every year a young defense can continue to improve. Charles Godfrey is an example of a young defender just learning along the way. The loss of Peppers may be huge though, as he was the best pass rusher they had, and was used in various ways. I do think they can bounce back from the loss, and continue improving. The Panthers defense should be very solid this season, but will have their hands full with the passing attack that is the NFC South (minus the Bucs of course).

Prediction – The run game will be murderous for the NFC South, which to me does not have a team with an exceptional run defense or even a moderate one (no, Saints don’t). Pick up Stewart and D-Will for Fantasy Football!

9-7 2nd place in NFC South
