Can Kolb Throw For 4k Yards?

Once upon a time, if a quarterback threw for more than 4,000 yards in a season it was considered a truly remarkable achievement. Well, this past season a record 10 quarterbacks surpassed the 4,000-yard plateau. Two seasons ago, six quarterbacks hit the milestone. In 2007, seven passed for over 4,000 yards which at the time was the record.

Obviously, the rule changes to benefit the passing game certainly have had an impact. However, only 43 quarterbacks in NFL history have reached the 4,000-yard mark and not one of them did it in an Eagles uniform. Donovan McNabb owns virtually every passing record, but the most yards he ever threw for in a season was 3,916 in 2008. Of course, it could be argued that if he wasn’t rested for most of the final two games of the 2004 season he would have surpassed the mark. He finished with 3,875 yards, but the bottom line is he didn’t crack four grand.

Kevin Kolb became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 300 yards in each of his first two starts (718 total) last season. If he were to keep that pace for the entire season, he’d crush the single-season NFL mark currently held by Dan Marino (5,084). While that is not expected from Kolb, it is still very possible. With weapons like Brent Celek, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Lesean McCoy, and Desean Jackson the sky’s the limit for this young but potent offense. We won’t find out until the Eagles season opener September 12 vs Green Bay if Kolb is the real deal, but all signs point to Kolb becoming one of the most illustrious quarterbacks in Philadelphia Eagles history.
