Calling All Vikings Fans!

As we get ready to head into the 2011 season, there is a lot of hype surrounding a few notable teams. The Dolphins are being put onto a pedestal, the Jets seem poised to assume control of that division for a while, the Patriots are being pushed back into the woods, the Steelers are imploding, the Cowboys almost seem ready to surge, the Lions made some great off season deals, the Chargers now might have competition, the 49ers are just good, and then there’s the Saints and the Vikings. While it seems that everyone is on the side of the Saints in the NFC since they are the defending Superbowl champs, the Vikes return all starters and have added depth at key positions. So who do we lock in as favs for the NFC and AFC and the Superbowl? It would be easy to say that the Colts and the Saints should be back, but I do not believe so. After days of early study (early meaning as I get to watch teams more as the season goes by, this will be abridged) I have put together a little list of contenders to the Throne so to speak:

AFC- This conference is not easy to break down, but after my analysis, I have boiled it down to 4 teams in the end. The Colts, of course, will once again reach the acme of their conference. With the Colts leading the AFC with a 13-3 record, I have the Jets second at 12-4, the Ravens at 10-6, and the Chargers at 9-7. This will boil down to a clash between the Jets and the Ravens, where the Jets will defeat the Ravens 28-13 to advance to the dance.

The NFC is a little trickier, but the end result has been the same every time I run the Sims and crunch the numbers. The Vikes lead the conference with a 15-1 record, the Cowboys a distant second at 11-5, the Saints at 10-6, and the 49ers at 10-6. The Vikes defeat the Cowboys once again in the NFC championship game 33-21 and advance to the dance.

The Dance: The game will be strength against strength and weakness against weakness: the Jets’ vaunted passing defense against the Vikes’ dominating rush defense and the Jets’ lacking pass offense against the less than spectacular pass defense of the Vikes. The difference between the 2 will be special teams. The Vikes’ special teams made great strides last year, and the Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan just kicks anyone who doesn’t play special teams well enough off his team. So who takes the Lombardi home this year?

Percy Harvin does. The Vikes win a great Superbowl showdown with the Jets, celebrate their 50th in spectacular fashion as Percy returns a late third quarter punt for the go ahead touchdown for a 20-14 Vikes victory.

Sorry to run the spoiler, but I had to do it.

Go Vikes!!
