For Oakland to rise to the next level, the WR corps needs to improve, rapidly.
Last season the Raiders struggled catching and throwing the football, their top receiver was their TE, Zach Miller. with 66 receptions 805 yards and 3 td’s.
The talent that the Raiders bring to the table in 2010 are as follows:
Louis Murphy. who led all WRs with 34 receptions and picked up four touchdowns. He had a total of 521 yards, not too shabby for a rookie.
Chaz Schillens is trying to heal yet again last year injuries had limited him, but he still managed 29 receptions, two touchdowns and 365 yards in only eight games. The Raiders are hoping he’ll be good for training camp.
Johnnie Lee Higgins was the vanishing player of last year, in 2008 he was a useful surprise who could return punts and also make some nifty catches in traffic. This last season saw him make 19 receptions, with zero touchdowns along with four fumbles which didn’t help his game at all.
Then there’s Darrius Heyward-Bey. Like him or hate him he was our draft pick and he is still raw. Dealing with JaMarcus Russell’s bad throws and not a very good set of catching skills cut down his game. But this year in OTAs he has caught everything thrown his way, even though that Nmandi, Chris Johnson, and Stanford Routt weren’t there defending him, his stock is looking up. He managed nine catches and a single touchdown but lost a key throw against the Chiefs that sealed the fate late in the game.
Jacoby Ford will likely be the Kick/Punt returner for the forseeable future.
One bit of great news for the Receiving corps is that JaMarcus is no longer trying to play QB as he was cut earlier this off season.
Replacing Russell will be Jason Campbell, his last year’s stats are 3,618 yards thrown 20 Td’s and 15 ints which is a huge upgrade from any other QB Raiders have had in the recent years.
Gradkowski, who did well in his starts for the Raiders an actually winning games, has a habit of getting injured. Let]s hope Campbell does not have the same problem.
As a whole the Offense has got better, let’s just hope they can stay healthy and wreck some havoc for the Raider Nation this coming season.
